China’s Recent Attempt at Medical Tourism

Nanjing has launched the Traditional Chinese Medicine International Health and Wellness Tourism Program. Nanjing welcomed the first 48 foreign visitors from Equatorial Guinea on July 21, 2015. After visiting main scenic spots in Nanjing, they specially experienced Outpatient Department of Nanjing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, listening to Traditional Chinese Medicine experts’ comprehensive introduction on Traditional Chinese Medicine, tasting herbal tea, and participating in pulse-taking diagnosis by Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners on site. 

Xinjiang has built up a medical health maintenance tourism brand. On July 10-12, 2015, 36 travel agencies and two medical institutions from Russia arrived in Xinjiang, separately, for a systematic observation of the medical resources in Xinjiang. According to data provided by related departments in Almaty State, Kazakhstan, in January 2015, there were more than 3,900 people who traveled to Xinjiang for the purpose of tourism, among whom the number of people for the purpose of medical treatment has been on the gradual increase. Tourists from Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Azerbaijan, and Georgia have frequently come to Xinjiang for medical tourism, most of whom are seniors and children, since the program provides treatments for high blood pressure, rheumatism, kidney disease, calculus, etc. A lot of others come to Xinjiang for beauty, loss of weight, and other such medical treatments that focus on physical therapy. The Russian delegations of medical tourism would like the most to experience traditional medical treatment and health maintenance and health and fitness. Traditional medical treatment mainly covers diabetes, arthritis, high blood pressure, etc., while the health maintenance and health and fitness includes acupuncture, massage, cupping therapy, and hydrotherapy. 

The Guiping Health Maintenance Tourism and Culture Comprehensive Area Project was started. On November 20, 2017, the establishment of Guangxi Guiping West Mountain Spring International Health Maintenance Tourism and Culture Comprehensive Area Project was started. The selected venue of the project is Bailan Village, Xishan Town, Guiping City, Guangxi Province. The project is located near the mountain and by the river. It is close to downtown Xunzhou City on the east. The project is a key contracted project for China-ASEAN Exposition 2011 by the Municipal People’s Government of Guiping City. It has been listed as a major tourism project in the autonomous region and a key project with integrated development at the autonomous region level. The planning and construction of the project mainly include Chinese Ancient Civilization Studies and Health Maintenance Leisure Area, Wetland Tourism and Health Maintenance Area, Zen Tea and Health Maintenance and Senior Care Area, Xunzhou Cultural Tourism Area, Hot Spring Conference Resort Area, and Tourists Distributing and Supporting Area. It will be built into a place that incorporates cultural interaction, characteristic tourism, health maintenance and repose, health and senior care, conference reception, high-end forums, training and development, and other such services and facilities. The project site covers an area of about 2,200mu, with a total investment of about RMB 3.6 billion. 

In November 2014, an agreement was signed for the development and investment cooperation of Zhangjiajie Zhuoda Daping International Tourism Resort. With a planning area of 120 sq.km., the resort is connected to a national AAAAA scenic area – Tianmenshan National Forest Park, as a whole. The proprietor, Zhuoda Group, will focus on building High-end Senior Care Demonstration Base, International Valley Health Maintenance Base, International Rehabilitation Center, Mountain Recreational Sports Zone, Modern Agricultural Sightseeing Area and other such key projects in this region. In 2013, Zhangjiajie received 36 million visitors, among whom two million were foreign visitors. The amount of tourism revenue was RMB 20.8 billion.
